Endorsed by MA-SHARE Advisory Committee - September
29, 2003
Vision
The Electronic Health Records (EHRs)
Project goal is to increase the implementation of electronic health
records in internal medicine office practices in Massachusetts,
thereby improving the quality and safety of patient care.
Sponsors
The Electronic Health Records Project
is sponsored by the American College of Physicians, endorsed by
the MA Medical Society and directed by David Bates, MD, MSc.; Medical
Director of Clinical and Quality Analysis, Partners HealthCare
System.
Project Description
Project objectives include:
- Developing a coalition of stakeholders that will support expanded
use of EHRs in the region;
- Screening and recruiting EHR software vendors that will provide
systems at low cost for a demonstration project, and collaborate
with evaluation procedures;
- Addressing legislative and financial barriers that may impede
diffusion of EHRs;
- Recruiting physicians and physician groups to participate in
a demonstration project.
The Electronic Health Records Project
fits with MA-SHARE goals in that the diffusion of EHR technology
offers the potential to improve the quality and efficiency of patient
care.

The Massachusetts Medical Society and
the University of Hong Kong Department of Community Medicine surveyed 423
Massachusetts physicians about their future plans and comfort level
for information technology. Eighty-nine percent believe that
