Physician Credentialing Project

Vision
The Physician Credentialing Project will seek to streamline and
coordinate physician credentialing and re-credentialing processes
throughout the state.

Massachusetts Medical Society, Massachusetts Association of Health
Plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA, and Massachusetts Hospital
Association, in collaboration with the MA Board of Registration
in Medicine (BORIM)
Project Description
The goals of the Physician Credentialing Project are to:
- Maintain accurate and timely credentialing information for
hospitals and health plans to ensure patient safety and quality
of care
- Link data sources
- Reduce the administrative and financial impact of redundant
and inefficient business processes
Issues to be tackled include:
- Increased physician education and outreach about existing and
new opportunities for streamlining
- Adoption of uniform application forms
- Improved coordination of the collection, centralization and
access to credentialing data
- Better alignment of state licensing, hospital credentialing
and health plan credentialing requirements
- Reductions in administrative delays
- Implementation and adoption of appropriate support technologies
The Physician Credentialing Project fits with MA-SHARE goals toward
improving patient safety and quality of care, increasing administrative
simplification and reducing costs, expanding the availability of
standardized centralized credentialing information, maintaining
state-wide focus and impact, and employing appropriate standards
for data security.
