Endorsed by MA-SHARE Advisory Committee - September 29, 2003
Vision
The goal of The Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance Project (BSS)
is to engage the health care community in a data exchange activity
that benefits patient health and security throughout Massachusetts.
Sponsors
The Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance Project is directed by
Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, MPH, Co-director of the Center
for Biopreparedness at Children's Hospital Boston.
Project Description
Project objectives include:
- Conducting a pilot in 3-5 Massachusetts hospitals that employ
the Children's Hospital-developed AEGIS software to monitor real-time
Emergency Department data to detect disease outbreaks, especially
bioterrorism;
- Expanding the network of participants to create broader group
of regional entities for the purpose of public health surveillance;
- Demonstrating the value of shared clinical data.
The Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance Project Fits with MA-SHARE
goals, as its purpose is to improve region-wide patient health
and safety, it involves implementation of technology and collaborative
business practices in order to link clinical data for analysis
and intervention, and it presents an opportunity to extend benefits
to providers throughout the region.
