  • In November, 2004, the Consortium convened a workgroup to focus on issues related to the NPI. The workgroup created three sub-groups as follows:
    • Communications Sub-group: the goal of this sub-group is to determine the messages, vehicles, and target audiences regarding NPI requirements. The sub-group is co-chaired by representatives from BCBSMA (Roberta Zackman and Tanya Trombly) and Children's Hospital (Nancy Dunn and David Gates)
    • Implementation Sub-group: the goal of this sub-group is to develop community-based approaches to NPI implementation that make the process easier for all parties. There is a planning group consisting of members from the Board of Registration in Medicine (Dan Murphy), CareGroup (Larry Markson MD), the state Medicaid program MassHealth (Elizabeth Shields), the Massachusetts Medical Society (Dana Cooper), and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (Rita Hunt and Natalie Cunningham).
    • Sub-Parts Sub-group: the goal of this sub-group is to identify issues and develop best practices related to the NPI sub-parts requirements. It is chaired by Linda Guerra of the Beth Israel Deaconess Physician Organization.
  • The Implementation Sub-group has worked with the Board of Registration in Medicine (BORIM), Massachusetts' physician licensing agency, to develop an approach to bulk enumerate physicians in the state. You can find this initiative described in their press release.
