Description
WGBH Interactive creates educational media across broadcast, web,
mobile devices, and high- touch distribution mechanisms. Regardless of
one's prior subject knowledge, learning modalities, available time, or
specific need, WGBH aims to provide accessible and accurate information
that encourages learners to delve deeper into areas of interest.
Topics Include:
- Recent work and examples of media that help educate healthcare
professionals and the general public;
- Goals of WGBH when guiding people through a health issue are:
- Educate by providing accurate and accessible information;
- Demystify the disorder and process of dealing with it;
- Familiarize people with the terminology of the disorder in the healthcare system;
- Humanize patents and medical professionals
- A look at the challenges and difficulty in judging the impact of a
health initiative, what tools should be used to measure it, and how to
do it;
- Statistics regarding several key issues that affect consumers today including health illiteracy, credibility and accuracy of information, and others;
- Discussion on how knowledge and awareness translate into behavior, and the tools necessary to pinpoint and learn from this;
- Open discussion for the audience to share feedback and hear lessons learned.

Featured Speaker
Annie Valva, Director of Research and Business Development, WGBH Interactive,
has over 15 years of experience in developing educational digital media,
including broadband applications, enhanced TV, Web sites, traditional publishing,
and cross-platform projects. As Vice President of Content and Technology Integration
for Pearson Broadband in London, she oversaw the development and launch of broadband
services to primary school children throughout the U.K. Annie spent six years as Director
of Technology for WGBH Interactive, and she has worked extensively with high tech companies
in order to develop partnerships that utilize emerging distribution platforms for educational
content delivery. Her current focus is on presenting health and medical research for non-expert,
general public audience understanding. Annie earned her Masters in Educational Technology
from Harvard University, and she received her BA in Community Studies and Photojournalism
at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
