Description

Data has the habit of forming in silos. One solution that takes advantage of web technology, is the concept of a single window of information, commonly called a portal.

This presentation will begin by discussing the evolution of portals from simple, static data views to the interactive, personalized applications that are required in today's complex healthcare environment.

Intranet portals often are high on the list of webmaster priorities, but in our era of shrinking or static IT budgets and limited resources, healthcare webmasters are challenged to reconcile the competing demands of portal users, existing IT investments, and practical reality.

This presentation will cover ways that portal technology can support a standards-based intranet that is flexible, cost-effective, secure, personalized, and reliable.

With a standards-based portal approach, the intranet framework easily incorporates the increasing number and diversity of healthcare resources -- information, applications and services -- that users need, to perform the clinical and administrative work of the healthcare organization.

The standards-based technology takes advantage of legacy investments, avoiding the costs of a "rip and replace" or single-vendor approach.

Stable, user friendly and secure intranet solutions must go beyond just the technology. The people, process and organization must also be taken into account and we will present some ideas and case studies on how webmasters can work to bring all these elements together to provide a solid foundation for the intranet portal, while supporting security and privacy regulations.
