A collaboration of Chief Privacy Officers for "covered entities" on educational activities for HIPAA Privacy mandates
Mission
The Privacy Officers Forum was established by the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium to assist Chief Privacy Officers and their organizations' compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Regulations, to take effect on April 14, 2003 by means of the following initiatives:
- Convene a bi-monthly forum of privacy officers for the exchange of practical information among those directly affected by the privacy regs;
- Facilitate consensus on standardization of "reasonable and appropriate" implementation of HIPAA policies, procedures and forms;
- Educate Privacy Officers through a) these regular meetings, b) panel discussions, c) reports from Privacy Officers Forum Subgroups, and d) reports from other entities;
- Promote the work of the Privacy Officers Forum and other privacy groups among the health care community;
- Seek clarifications as a group from DHHS, federal and state officials;
- Encourage open sharing of work products, policies and associated issues with the intent to:
- save time and speed compliance for participants
- disseminate examples, templates, compliance case studies, frequently asked questions (FAQs) via a dedicated section of the Privacy Resource Center on the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium website, with links to the website's HIPAA Resource Center
Support for creating this group comes from the Board of Directors of the Consortium. In addition, the Administrative Simplification Work Group of the Massachusetts Health Care Task Force recommended the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium as the appropriate organization to serve the convener role around HIPAA compliance.
