Advancing the Future of Health Care Delivery through Electronic Health Records
"Advancing the Future of Health Care Delivery through Electronic Health Records" presented by Daniel MacNeil, Director of Development Coordination Information Systems, South Shore Hospital; Barbara Hobbs, EHR Project Manager, MEDITECH; and Phil Businger, Interoperability Manager, MEDITECH.

Health Information Exchange (HIE) requires collaboration in the healthcare community involving hospitals, physician practices, and software vendors. As exchange initiatives emerge and develop, what are the obstacles that these participants must overcome? The collective input of all the stakeholders and their ability to collaborate is vital to the project's success. This collective presentation will describe the sociology and technology behind a local standards-based HIE initiative, as well as a demonstration of the pilot system at South Shore Hospital. The presenters will discuss the selection process, workflow and process changes, technical requirements, and the challenges to achieving collaboration.

Healthcare’s Consumer Shift
The changing landscape of our healthcare system is being driven by a consumer shift that will significantly impact three different stakeholder groups: Consumers, Payers, and Providers. As more of the financial burden for healthcare is shifted to consumers and patients, they will begin demanding new types of services and behavior from their healthcare providers and payers. In this presentation Tom will discuss the impact of these changing dynamics on each group, exploring the current "Healthcare Gap" that exists today between consumers and providers/payers. Tom will explain how Microsoft’s unique Enterprise + Consumer strategy is designed to bridge the "Healthcare Gap", recognizing the consumer personal health record (PHR) as the keystone. "Healthcare’s Consumer Shift" will be presented by Tom Poole, Industry Solutions Director, Microsoft Health Solutions Group.

#3      Inner Wireless logo
Tracking Medical Assets for Improved Patient Care and Productivity
Today’s hospitals are challenged by the need to quickly and accurately locate equipment assets, patients and staff. The real issue is to locate valuable medical equipment and quickly match these items with patients and clinicians who need them.

Today’s marketplace offers several different options for location systems, but this InnerWireless focus group session will highlight a practical approach to successful location system deployment. The emphasis is on real-world experience in working with a location solution within a hospital’s operational environment.

This is a highly interactive session, with the InnerWireless team facilitating a discussion on the following location solution topics:

  • Understand the technology and information requirements unique to mobile hospital workers and their need for timely access to equipment, patients and other staff
  • Recognize existing location system options, with a view of their advantages and disadvantages
  • Illustrate case study of actual implementation and usage of a location system
  • Explain operational and cost benefits of an RF location system
  • Determine enterprise/clinical payoffs and timeframes for implementation
  • Identify process improvement opportunities
  • Forecast key financial results, including anticipated return of investment

Participants will walk away from the session with a better understanding of how to address a wide range of technology and clinical challenges for accurately locating valuable hospital assets.
