Afternoon Keynote Description:
"The Integration of EHR, PHR and e-Prescribing: A Collision?"

 Afternoon speakers

EHR, PHR and e-Prescribing: evolving independently and for differing reasons

The integration of EHRs, PHRs and e-Prescribing will be discussed in the afternoon Keynote presentation by John Glaser, PhD, CIO of Partners Healthcare System and the subsequent panel discussion.

Each piece of the puzzle is evolving independently and for differing reasons. Different stakeholders have different emphases and perspectives on increasing market share, adding services, improving efficiency, increasing revenue, improving care quality and safety and reducing costs which leads to uneven growth in these activities. Further, the role and future of RHIOs (Regional Health Information Organizations) is unclear.

For example, PHRs are thought to be a way of getting patients more engaged in their care. However, they are offered not only by providers, but also by employers or stand-alone vendors. The reasons for offering PHRs are varied and include cost reduction and healthcare quality improvement. These different offerings have different strengths and weaknesses.

Dr. Glaser will share his thoughts about the reasons for the "collision" of these technologies as well as an optimistic look at what we can expect in the future.

Following this presentation will be a panel discussion with experts in the area of physician-patient communication, e-prescribing, privacy laws, and technology. Kate Berry, Senior Vice President of SureScripts, will discuss e-prescribing and the pharmacies’ role in connectivity and as a data source for PHRs. Daniel Sands, MD, (Cisco Systems and Harvard Medical School) will offer the physician perspective on Health Information Technology (HIT). Colin Zick, JD, will discuss the legal issues associated with patient privacy and EHR/PHRs. Deborah Theobald (CEO, Vecna Technologies) will present the current technical landscape around open-source EHRs/PHRs and her thoughts about how they may be adopted. John Glaser will moderate the discussion and the Q&A session that will follow the presentations.
