Case Study
The Group Insurance Commission (GIC) provides and administers health insurance and other benefits to approximately 267,000 Massachusetts' employees and retirees, and their dependents and survivors. They are leaders in the area of providing informed choice for their consumers and will present their work on the GIC Clinical Performance Improvement initiative. The work was based on a large consolidated data base that was created using claims data from the health plans. The plans used the cost and quality data derived from that data base to tier physicians and some hospitals.

Awarded to these four physicians for being instrumental in conceiving, championing, implementing, and managing the MedsInfo-ED project, which resulted in the first system in the nation to provide emergency department doctors with real-time access to patient prescription medication histories drawn from multiple health plan data sources.
