Focus of the Month - December 8, 2006 Agenda
What do wine production, deep space networks and healthcare outcomes have in common?
Friday, December 8, 2006 - 9:00-11:00am
Massachusetts Health Data Consortium, Waltham, MA

Description
Complex data and management problems are common and
rarely solved using a single method or approach. Using
lessons learned in other fields, ProVentive has refined
and applied a useful approach for modeling outcomes
and performance. We will describe the application of
this approach for complex chronic conditions, substance
use treatment and medical management. Similar approaches
have been successfully applied in planning and managing
wine production, deep space networks and risk management.
To overcome the inherent weaknesses of traditional
process oriented outcomes measures, we will describe
a longitudinal, pattern-based outcomes method. We will
also focus on the value of defining and measuring health
outcomes for managing health quality costs. Commonly
used process oriented outcome measures, measure processes
rather than true outcomes for patients. In fact, they
infer quality rather than directly measuring good outcomes.
This presentation is a case study of an effective approach
using a synthesis of analytics, rules and pattern-based
outcomes.
ProVentive is addressing the critical healthcare issues
of quality and costs in part by defining outcomes with
a longitudinal, patient-centric approach. A patient-centric,
proactive approach builds upon established research
to identify and address individuals with at-risk characteristics,
not just specific diseases. Using pattern recognition
to create long term, holistic and prospective profiles,
we create a comprehensive view of both the quality
and appropriateness of care for a variety of individual
profiles.
