Bridging the Digital Divide with SOA - The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Case Study

Friday, January 6, 2006 - 9:00-11:00am
Massachusetts Health Data Consortium, Waltham, MA

Presented by     Sun Microsystems logo

Description

Today's healthcare business leaders are looking for a fast return on new and existing IT investments, while seeking to obtain the flexibility and security standards needed to address ever-demanding business objectives. Many of these healthcare systems are faced with "siloed" mission critical custom or legacy systems that are not only difficult to replace without business risk and disruption, but represent a substantial time and cost investment to maintain. Coupled with the need to respond to market and legislative changes quickly and efficiently, address mergers, acquisitions and new business models, CIOs need the ability to leverage their existing systems along with the ability to add new applications. Of course, all of this must be done within budget constraints requiring IT department to do more with less.

Analysts, business leaders, and technology officers are realizing the ability to quickly address this challenge by leveraging a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). With a service-driven approach, organizations can obtain strategic business benefits through the delivery of time and cost-effective IT projects.

Beyond enterprise application integration, the Sun Java Integration Suite provides the ability to deploy high-value, SOA-based high-value composite applications on top of existing infrastructure. This allows organizations to leverage existing IT investments while providing a graceful means to retire legacy applications as needed, to create new views of mission-critical data and to respond faster to the integration of new applications.

This presentation will focus on the technical deployment of the Sun Java Integration Suite to meet the demanding needs of one of the nation's premier health insurers, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Attendees will benefit from an overview of the business drivers necessitating a service-oriented architecture, the key performance indicators of operational goals and an overview of the technology that has brought together community care providers, trading partners and benefit plan administrators.
