Case Studies Demonstrate Health Care Networking Benefits

Health care leaders from three states involved in collaborative efforts to improve quality through technology will present case studies at the Consortium’s 28th Annual Meeting and Conference on "Community Clinical Connectivity" on April 28, 2006.

Following their individual presentations, Micky Tripathi, PhD, CEO of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC); Laura Adams, President and CEO of the Rhode Island Quality Institute; and Marc Overhage, MD, PhD, CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange, will participate in a panel discussion with John Glaser, PhD, Vice President and CIO of Partners HealthCare System. Ray Campbell, Executive Director and CEO of the Consortium, will moderate.

  • The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative is working to create a network of electronic health records. It reached a milestone in March when a four-physician practice in Newburyport began using EHR for all patients as part of a pilot program that eventually will network 41 area practices, hospitals and other health care facilities. MAeHC, formed in 2004, also has pilot programs in two additional communities.

  • The Rhode Island Quality Institute is a public-private partnership working to leverage the state’s unique characteristics (small size, line-of-sight trust, and governmental accessibility) to improve care quality, safety and value through collaborative innovation, according to Adams. It has resulted in unprecedented physician leadership and collaboration in EHR adoption, begun significant community and consumer involvement in the health information exchange initiative and is working for the passage of a $20M capital IT request from Governor Donald L. Carcieri, currently before the RI legislature.

“The key to all of this work is achieving balance … between the need for significant input into decision-making and the need to make a decision; balancing the strong need to protect patient privacy and the need to use health information to improve care for all; and balancing the need to move quickly and the need to approach this thoughtfully,” said Adams.

  • The Indiana Health Information Exchange’s efforts to improve quality and efficiency entail creating a secure electronic infrastructure to expand communication among health care stakeholders. A clinical message system has been deployed in Central Indiana. The “wired” system eventually will provide improved patient information for caregivers and in-depth data to researchers.
