Session Description - Luncheon Keynote:
"IT Initiatives in the Legislature"

Keynoter Seeks Political Support for Health Care IT

Marchibroda-Koutoujian

Janet Marchibroda, CEO, of e-Health Initiative in Washington, DC, saw a positive sign of support for improving health care through technology when President Bush spoke for expanded use of computerized patient records during his State of the Union speech.

She will deliver the keynote speech on "IT Initiatives in the Legislature" at the Consortium's Health Information Technology Conference. Rep. Peter Koutoujian, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, will serve as moderator.

Marchibroda leads a collaborative organization whose mission is to improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of health care through information technology. Its "Investing in America's Health" initiative is a multi-stakeholder coalition that aims to seek federal investment in a health care information infrastructure. And its "Connecting Communities for Better Health" project is establishing a resource network for communities and stakeholders interested in health care information technology and health information exchange.

As chair of the Health Care committee, Rep. Koutoujian, an attorney, is fully involved in health care issues and initiatives before the Massachusetts Legislature. His office publishes "Health on the Hill," a newsletter delivering public health information and health care news items. During the past year he has worked at the forefront of several health care issues. In response to the country's childhood obesity epidemic, Koutoujian filed legislation that calls for banning the sale of unhealthy foods in public schools. He also successfully lobbied the House of Representatives to pass a workplace smoking ban.
