IT Expert to Discuss Conversion to Electronic Record |
|
Conferees at the Consortium's Health Information Technology Conference will have the opportunity to question David W. Bates, M.D., M.SC., Chief of the Division of General Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Medical Director of Clinical and Quality Analysis for Partners HealthCare System, whose work is focused on the use of computer systems to improve patient care.
Dr. Bates, a clinical epidemiologist, has done extensive work on evaluating the incidence and preventability of adverse drug events or injuries due to drugs. He will discuss a new program to help Massachusetts outpatient providers make the conversion from paper to electronic records. The program has been supported by MassShare. Dr. Bates also will address the safety and quality benefits associated with using electronic health records in the outpatient setting during the conference, "Making e-Health Work: What You Need to Know," to be held Friday, February 6 at the Westin Hotel, Waltham, Mass.
"The use of electronic health records in the outpatient setting is growing, as is the use of computerized order entry in hospitals," said Dr. Bates.
He spoke of the benefits to be realized as Information Technology becomes more prevalent in health care.
"Increased use of IT represents one of the most important tools for improving health care safety and quality," said Dr. Bates. "Safety can be improved in many ways. For example, with computerized prescribing many errors can be prevented by structuring prescriptions and delivering clinical decision support."
Dr. Bates, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, is a practicing general internist. He is the co-director of the Clinical Effectiveness Program, a joint program between Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health; the principal investigator of the Harvard Center of Excellence in Patient Safety; the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management; the chair of the National Alliance for Primary Care Informatics, the chair of a Massachusetts task force on developing best practices for improving the response to critical laboratory results; and was chair of the Quality and Safety track for the initial National Health Information Infrastructure meeting.
