Description
To practice evidence-based medicine (EBM) effectively, a clinician must make clinical decisions based on the existing body of medical literature, the desires of an adequately informed patient, and that clinicians own experience. It is virtually impossible for practitioners to stay current with the rate of new clinical research being performed and medical literature being published. And, in today's cost and time restricted healthcare system, it is difficult to fully and consistently inform patients.
Robust and reputable education and reference offerings are available in the market, but they are often underutilized because of how they are implemented within a healthcare organization's systems of care. Therefore, the goals of improving patient care, reducing inappropriate treatment variation, improving patient satisfaction, reducing medical malpractice claims, and saving staff time are less likely to be achieved.
Strategies and methods for integrating EBM resources into various systems of care will be discussed with a focus on technical and operational considerations. Real-world examples will include:
- Integrating EBM guidelines into a CPOE system (would also apply to EMR and Call Center systems)
- Supporting patient and provider pay-for-performance initiatives
- Incorporating interactive, patient-facing tools in pre-procedure planning
- Targeting educational materials to patients
