Technology Helps Consumers Control Own Health Care
High-tech and high-touch are the bywords for consumer empowerment as the health care industry creates support systems for consumer-driven health care.
Speakers at the Consortium's 26th Annual Meeting and "Consumer-Driven Healthcare" Conference will present a look into the future of health care during the "Technology & Marketplace Approach" panel. The conference takes place April 13 at The Westin Waltham.
Erin Lenox of Hilb Rogal & Hobbs will moderate the panel and present "The E-Health Landscape For Consumer Empowerment." She will be joined by Philip Marshall, MD, MPH, Vice President of Products for WebMD Health; John P. Driscoll, Senior Vice President for Product and Business Development for Medco Health Solutions; and Ted Meads, vice president of Lumenos.
Many Hilb Rogal & Hobbs clients are employers interested in consumerism and consumer-driven health care, said Lenox. They want consumers to think about how they purchase health care and how technology ties in to the decision-making process.
Medco, a pharmacy benefits manager, delivers high-tech and low-tech solutions to engage members in their pharmacy care, according to Driscoll.
Each Medco member has a personalized Web site, with a complete pharmaceutical profile. The site provides members with a convenient set of tools with which to manage their health care within the context of their pharmacy benefit.
"At Medco, we've always believed that empowering consumers is a key strategy in helping our clients and members manage the cost and quality of health care," said Driscoll. "This belief has driven our long-standing focus on developing Web-based and other decision support capabilities that encourage members to take an active role in their pharmacy care."
Lumenos provides consumers with the Lumenos Health Improvement Program, an integrated array of high-tech and high-touch support programs to help them make sound health decisions for themselves and their families. The program helps consumers better understand their health and helps them get the support they need for ongoing condition management.
High-touch support programs include the ability for consumers to fill out an online health profile to assess their current health and to access personal health coaches, who help coordinate health care needs. High-tech support programs range from tools to research condition management, drug cost information, and doctor and hospital quality information to tools to help consumers manage their claims and track their health records.
"Consumer-driven health care is a solution we're very passionate about," Meads said. "We believe that an engaged and knowledgeable consumer is the best long-term solution to current health care industry challenges."
WebMD Health, one of three WebMD divisions, is focused on health care services for payers and employers. It offers an integrated health and benefits portal.
"We've created technology that can bring in an in-depth health information profile and help patients manage health data, risks, formulary, attributes of their medical plan and personalized health information," said Dr. Marshall. "We create a unified and consistent experience as patients interface with all health and benefits information."
The goal of the program is to facilitate better decision making. Priorities are suggested for patients using a personalized health guide. They might be asked to read specific articles, according to their diagnoses, or they might be urged to stop smoking.
The portal offers benefits decision support as well as treatment support, according to Dr. Marshall. It helps consumers make informed choices about benefits plans during open enrollment by comparing out-of-pocket expenses to plan costs, based on personalized user data.
