Patient Origin Series Reports
Distribution of Discharges, Days and Population by Locality, Age, and Service
These reports summarize the detailed Massachusetts town resident-specific data contained in the each of the Consortium's (6) Patient Origin Report by Town volumes, and are combined with population data for each of town and service, by gender and age group.
These community-based reports, available for residents of all (351) MA towns, profile the total number of acute-care hospital discharges and days, and include census information for each Massachusetts town, based on population data obtained from the Massachusetts Institute for Social and Economic Research (MISER)*.
In the example, the total number of discharges among all Massachusetts residents has increased from 665,417 total discharges in 1998 to 666,048 discharges in 1999. But during this same time period, the total number of hospital days has declined over 18,000 days among all ages statewide from 3,409,310 days in 1998 to 3,391,013 days in 1999.
More specifically, among all Massachusetts resident discharges, ages 65+, the total number of discharges remains consistent from year to year. In 1998 there were 286,214 discharges over age 65+ and in 1999 there were 286,703 ages 65+ discharges statewide, a difference of less than 500 total discharges between these two years. However, for the same age 65+ Massachusetts resident populations, the total number of hospital days have declined dramatically.
In 1998, there were 1,662,276 total days reported among all discharges Age 65+, in 1999 there were 1,628,947 hospital days reported among these same ages, yielding 33,329 fewer hospital days for all Age 65+ discharges reported between 1998 and 1999.
