Emergency Department Visits in Massachusetts

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts first required the collection of data from the state's seventy-seven hospital emergency departments in 2000. A full data set was required to be reported beginning on October 1, 2001, while a partial data set was mandatory for the period from January 1, 2000 through September 30, 2001. The Emergency Department database includes data elements that parallel those available for the Inpatient Database, such as demographic and diagnosis elements. The Consortium currently has full data sets from FY2003 to the current year listed below. Some historical data (as outlined above) for FY2000 through FY2002 is available as well.

Emergency Deparment data is tracked only for those patients who are not admitted to the reporting hospital as an inpatient or in outpatient observation status.
