Kija Kim

Kija Kim, President and CEO, Harvard Design and Mapping Company, Inc.. For over thirty years, Ms. Kim has brought her unique brand of energy, insight and innovation to business and civic matters. A pioneer in the field of geographic information systems (GIS), Ms. Kim was among the first to apply the CAD techniques to automated mapping, leading to present day GIS technology.

In 1988, Ms. Kim co-founded Harvard Design and Mapping Company, Inc. (HDM), and was one of the first women to head a technology company. As HDM's President and CEO, Ms Kim has remained true to her innovative spirit, continually striving to integrate GIS services with cutting edge technology.

As CEO of HDM, Ms. Kim's accomplishments have resulted in numerous awards and recognitions. Most recently, Ms. Kim received the Women-Owned Business Enterprise Award from the Department of Transportation in recognition of her significant contribution to the transportation industry and the nation's economy. Ms. Kim was also named one of Enterprising Women's Top Ten Women in Technology. Other recognitions include Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS) Woman of the Year, YWCA Business Woman of the Year Finalist, Women in Business Leadership Award, Inc. Magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, and the Excellence in GIS Award from the GeoSpatial Information and Technology Association (GITA).

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Ms. Kim is active in civic and community affairs. An advocate for minority and women business issues, Ms. Kim has been invited to participate in a number of White House conferences, including the Minority Business Summit and the Economic Development Conference.

At the request of the Governor of Massachusetts, Ms. Kim has also served on the Massachusetts Governor's Advisory Committee on Women's Issues, the Massachusetts Asian American Commission, the Massachusetts Governor's Advisory Commission on Welfare to Work, and the MassJobs Council. Ms. Kim has acted as a trade ambassador for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, visiting both Korea and Mexico.

A founding member of the U.S. Library of Congress GIS Center, Ms. Kim serves on a number of civic and professional boards, including the Massachusetts Software and Internet Council, Clark University Board of Trustees, Bentley College Graduate School of Management Advisory Board, Center for Women & Enterprise (CWE) Advisory Board and BostonFed Bancorp, Inc. Board of Directors.

Recognized for her outstanding communication skills, Ms. Kim has served as a keynote speaker and participated in numerous panels and workshops. With a firm grasp of contemporary issues, Ms. Kim has often been featured in various print and electronic media outlets, including Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, and The Boston Globe.

Prior to founding HDM, Ms. Kim held senior managerial positions with civil and environmental engineering firms. She is a graduate of Seoul University, Seoul, Korea and attended Clark University Graduate School of Geography. She also completed Executive Management programs at Babson College and The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.
