Marylou Buyse, MD

Named President and Chief Executive Officer at the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans in April of 2001, Dr. Buyse continues to maintain a primary care practice at New England Baptist Medical Associates in West Roxbury Prior to joining the Association, Dr. Buyse was Vice President, Health Affairs at United Healthcare of New England, and also served as a Medical Director at United Healthcare. She was the second woman to serve as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society (1998-1999). Dr. Buyse was appointed as a member of the Board of Registration in Medicine from 1994 through 1995 and chaired its Licensing Committee. She is a Trustee of the Boston Medical Library and serves on numerous board and task forces.

Dr. Buyse was president of the Massachusetts branch of the American Medical Woman's Association and represented the New England Region and served on that organization's national Board of Directors. Other affiliations include serving on the board of the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Cancer Society and of the American Heart Association. She served as Chair of the RI Folic Acid Council for the March of Dimes. Her biography appears in several publications including Who's Who in America.

Dr. Buyse served as Director and President of the Center for Birth Defects Information Services, Inc., a non-profit international scientific organization that pioneered the development of the on-line databases, computer-based diagnostic support systems, and scientific information systems in the fields of genetics and birth defects. She has published extensively in the scientific literature, and is the Editor-in-Chief of the multi-volume Birth Defects Encyclopedia (Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1990).

A native of New York City, Dr. Buyse received her Bachelor of Science degree from Hunter College in 1966, and her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1970. She completed her internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in 1971, and her residency at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center in 1973 where she also completed a fellowship in genetics and birth defects. In 1993, she received a Masters of Science degree in Preventive Health and Medical Administration at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is board-certified in several medical specialties including medical genetics, pediatrics, and medical management. She has served on the faculties of several distinguished medical schools and currently has a faculty appointment at Brown University School of Medicine.
